KJ’s Week 4 MLS picks
2017 record: 9-10
Profit/loss: -44.52
As George Costanza once proudly exclaimed: “I’m back, baby!” Well, that’s a stretch, but I did come to within one win of coming out of the red. Not bad for going winless on the handful of draws I’ve played so far.
Here are my Week 4 MLS picks:
New England Revolution -1.5 +115
Risk 50 to win 57.50
This play is actually deeper than the obvious “OMG, MNUFC has a -9 goal differential through three matches” sizzling hot take. That’s certainly part of it, but it’s more so based on current international call-ups. The MNUFC roster simply isn’t deep enough to be without multiple starters, including some of its most-talented attackers. Take the Revs. Here are the players the Loons will be without today:
New York Red Bulls ML (3-way) -210
Risk 105 to win 50
Both teams will be without their starting No. 10s in Sascha Kljestan and Albert Rusnak, but RSL will additionally be without starting ‘keeper Nick Rimando. Add in a couple injuries and the travel factor, and this looks like a very tough spot for RSL. Lay the extra juice on the three-way moneyline for the home side to get it done in the Big Apple.
Columbus Crew SC ML (3-way) -120
Risk 60 to win 50
The Portland Timbers are without key players Darlington Nagbe and David Guzman. Crew SC, meanwhile, have only one moderate loss in defender/midfielder Jukka Raitala. Like the Red Bulls play, the road side has to travel across a few time zones in this one. This is a great chance for Crew SC to snag three points against a good team not at full strength.
