MLS Players Association releases statement on Heinemann saga
The MLS Players Association issued an official statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the Tommy Heinemann-FC Cincinnati voided contract situation from earlier this year. The MLSPA expressed support for Heinemann while condemning FC Cincinnati’s actions and handling of the situation.
Heinemann, a former member of the MLSPA, had his contract voided by FC Cincinnati in the preseason for what was deemed an existing knee injury. The USL intervened, ultimately ruling in favor of the player.
The 30-year-old striker had been healthy enough to train during his short stint in Cincinnati. And just prior to that, Heinemann logged an 89-minute shift in the NASL title match. He converted a penalty to help the now-defunct San Francisco Deltas lift the trophy after downing the New York Cosmos 2-0.
Heinemann currently plays for Penn FC, and for what it’s worth, was able to go 90-plus minutes before being subbed out in stoppage time during his team’s scoreless draw at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday.
Whatever the concern is with his knee, clearly it’s an injury he’s able to play through. But it’s also something that raises red flags during a physical.
Here’s the statement the MLSPA released via Twitter:
We are extremely disappointed in FC Cincinnati’s attempt to void a valid and enforceable contract with @TommyHeinemann. @USL @fccincinnati
