Forming a new club and taking the pitch for the first time is no small task, no matter what league a team is in.

New Jersey-based Monmouth Generals FC wrapped up its inaugural season in the Garden State Soccer League (GSSL) Summer League and learned that harsh lesson firsthand. The club finished with a paltry league mark of 2W-0D-5L and a -27 goal differential. Both wins came via forfeit.

Despite their struggles, the Generals remain optimistic, viewing the campaign as a learning experience and opportunity to grow.

“Now that the season is done and over we can look back on each game and really see where the team needs more development,” said captain Ambrogio “Gio” Troia. “It’s all progress from here.”

Of course, when things don’t go so well on the pitch, the captain bears a little extra responsibility in lifting his teammates up. Troia tried to keep things positive during such times.

“As a captain, if things are going south on the field I try to tell the rest of the boys just keep your heads up and let’s work hard till the last whistle,” he said.

Troia enjoyed playing for head coach and sporting director Abisai Gutierrez-Vera, and also marveled at the level of competition in the GSSL Summer League.

“Playing under Coach Abisai was great,” Troia added. “He’s got a great soccer IQ and knows where to put players on the field to get the most out of them.

“Over the seven games we played in this GSSL season we played against great teams ranging from all ages and it really shows the talent that the GSSL has. I was very impressed with our opponents in each match.”

Monmouth Generals FC will hope to build upon its tying 2019 season by being more competitive in 2020. That starts with raising expectations.

“In our next season, I am hoping we come back stronger and have a more positive record,” Troia said. “This means that the players will train even harder and give it 100% during every practice and game. See you all next season.”
